The University of Nairobi has received over 500 TurnItIn licences which are valid for one year. The Turnitin Software is anti-plagiarism software that detects any similarity in a given paper from other sources. The paper is checked against over millions of other student papers and any similarity is detected by the software.

There has been a challenge in checking for plagiarism in the student’s thesis and projects. Procuring the TurnItIn license, will rank the university favorably in the web metrics ranking specifically on openness.

The library department and ICTC department has been tasked with the mandate of sensitizing and training the staff on how to use the software. In a meeting held on 18th January 2016, it was agreed that the library department and the ICTC department to provide a group of trainers who will be trained on how the TurnItIn software works. These trainers will then be posted to the six campuses to train the lecturers and champions on how to use the software.

The lecturers are the ones who will be mandated with scanning the student’s thesis and projects before they are forwarded to the library

The training of trainers will take place on 26th January 2016. On 27th January 2016, all the ICTC staff and the librarians will be trained. Trainings in the colleges will start on 1st February 2015 to 5th February 2015. All colleges have been allocated two days with an exception of college of humanities and social sciences and the college of health sciences.

At the end of this training it is hoped that all stakeholders will now be in the know on how to use TurnItIn and immediately start scanning students’ thesis and projects.
