PERFORMANCE CONTRACT SECRETARIAT TEAM CONDUCTS MID-TERM REVIEW OF CENTRAL DEPARTMENTS

The University of Nairobi Performance Contract Secretariat team held a one day mid-term review of performance of majority of Central Departments on, January 20, 2015.

The Performance Contract team was led by Mr. Peter Muturi, Deputy Registrar in the Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, (Administration and Finance), Mr. Peter Busienei, Deputy Finance Officer (General) and Mr. Leonard Musyoka, Senior Assistant Registrar.

Speaking during the review with Central Departments, Performance Contract team urged the various Heads of Departments to write to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Peter M. F. Mbithi on the areas that are lagging behind and stopping their respective departments from meeting their performance targets. The projects initiated and completed also need to be pointed out in the note to the Vice-Chancellor. Lastly the challenges facing the department and the measures to counter the challenges need to be looked into as well.

Among the challenges facing the departments, according to various Departmental Heads include meeting the mandatory one third of tenders being given to Women, Youth and the Disabled persons in procurement awards. Secondly, the college is working on its key performance contract indicators: appropriations-in-aid, utilization of allocated funds, students’ mentorship and internships.

The departments were challenged to think of new ways of generating money and employ efficient ways when doing so.

When negotiating their targets, the various departments were prompted to not only work smart and ensure the targets are achieved, but to work even harder and ensure that the targets are surpassed.

"By surpassing the targets, that is how you over score," noted Mr. Peter Muturi, the Deputy Registrar in the Office of the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration and Finance).

The mid-term review of Central Departments is an annual exercise to establish how far the departments are in achieving their performance contract targets. Earlier on, the PC team visited the University Colleges, where they engaged the College Management on achieving their various targets as indicated in their college performance contract. The Performance Contract team is set to meet the other colleges in the week of 19-23 January, 2015.
