The data communication team has this week done an overhaul of the whole CBPS PABX (Private Automatic Branch Exchange) communication. This is an effort to increase efficiency in the telephone communication, and upgrade of the telecommunications to a much newer technology, reduce noise and increase in customer handling capacity.

The training of trainers on ORCid (Open Researcher and Contributor ID) and TurnItIn has started. The training is currently underway at the ICT laboratory at the JKML (Jomo Kenyatta Memorial Library).

The trainers are going through an intense one day training on how to use an ORCiD account and TurnItIn Software. After the training, they will be sent to the various colleges to assist the lecturers and other members of staff to sign up with ORCiD and how to check for plagiarism using TurnItIn.

ORCiD is a unique digital identifier that uniquely distinguishes one researcher to another especially those sharing same or similar names. ORCiD helps a researcher to easily and uniquely attach his identity to research objects such as datasets, equipment, articles, media stories, citations, experiments, patents, and notebooks.

The Turnitin Software is anti-plagiarism software that detects any similarity in a given paper from other sources. The paper is checked against over millions of other student papers and any similarity is detected by the software.

The University of Nairobi has acquired anti-plagiarism software –turnItIn. This is one if not the best anti plagiarism software that is used by many institutions of higher learning across the globe.

The software is able to detect and highlight any similarity in the paper.  The similarity rate shows the percentage of matching text, as well as sources for the text that was used in the student's paper.
