Huawei ICT Competition 2021-2022 National Final Award Ceremony was held on Thursday 27 January 2022 at Crown Plaza Hotel, Upper Hill Nairobi. Among the guests who grace the occasion were Principal Secretary MoICT & Youth Affairs, Chief of Education UNESCO Regional Office for Eastern Africa, Huawei Director Enterprise Business Group, UoN ICT Centre Director and others.
Huawei ICT Competition is for university and college students to showcase their skills in national, regional and global finals. The competition aims to drive the development of high-quality ICT talent, select qualified talent for the industry, continuously provide future driving forces and active participants for digital transformation, promote efficient mapping of talent supply and demand, and further contribute to a sustainable talent ecosystem.
2021-2022 ICT Competition attracted 3,000+ students from 40+ universities and colleges in Kenya. 18 Excellent students in Network, Cloud and Innovation have been selected to represent Kenya in Sub Sahara Africa ICT Competition to be held in February 2022. These students are from University of Nairobi, Jomo Kenyatta University, Machakos University, Kenyatta University, Zetech University and Laikipia University.
University of Nairobi students performed extremely well in the National Finals Competition 2021-2022. The top 3 students from UoN chosen to represent Kenya at the Regional Final at South Africa are:
1. Phillip Mbugua - From Department of Computer Science
2. Ravine Wafula - Department of Electrical and Information Engineering
3. Stephanie Cherono - Department of Electrical and Information Engineering
This students were awarded with certificates and gifts by Huawei Company for emerging the best team in Network Track. University of Nairobi students always produced excellent performance in all Huawei ICT Competition and intends to maintain the good track record.
The Principal Secretary in the Ministry of ICT and Youth Affairs speech pointed out why the competition is needed to showcase digital skills and entrepreneur spirit of our youth and thus boosting efforts to address poverty and unemployment in Kenya. He also said the government had forged partnership with industry's partners such as Huawei to facilitated training of youth in the high-end ICT skills such as block chain, internet of things (IOT), artificial intelligence and cloud computing to address the skills gap in the ICT sector, besides providing seed capital to spur growth of youth led technology start-ups.
