The University of Nairobi ICT Department pays tribute to Duncan Maigua Kariuki, who served as the Chief ICT Officer (Maintenance) with unwavering dedication and professionalism. Duncan was a highly skilled technologist known for his perseverance, always believing that every repair was worth attempting. His expertise in electronics and electrical systems extended beyond the University, as he consistently went above and beyond to diagnose and resolve technical challenges.
Beyond his technical contributions, Duncan was a passionate advocate for justice and human rights, standing in solidarity with his colleagues. His kindness, respect, and unwavering support left a lasting impact on the University community.
Professional Journey
Duncan began his career at the University of Nairobi in December 1997 as a Trainee Technologist in the Physics Department. His dedication and expertise earned him a promotion to Technologist in November 2003 within the same department. In May 2007, he joined the ICT Centre (ICTC) as a Senior ICT Officer (Maintenance), where his exceptional performance and leadership saw him rise to Chief ICT Officer in September 2013, a role he held with distinction until his untimely passing.
Throughout his career, Duncan played a pivotal role in major ICT projects at the University of Nairobi and beyond. He was instrumental in maintaining critical infrastructure, including heavy-duty UPS systems, backup generators, and air conditioning systems supporting the UoN ICT Data Center. His expertise was vital in the 2019 upgrade of the University's state-of-the-art Data Center. Duncan’s skills extended to hardware maintenance and repair, covering systems, printers, scanners, monitors, routers, switches, cabling, and other peripherals. He was also highly proficient in ICT procurement, overseeing the acquisition of ICT equipment, accessories, and major service contracts.
A self-motivated technologist and engineer, Duncan was known for his ability to work independently and collaboratively, consistently maintaining the highest professional standards. His flexibility and willingness to work long hours reflected his commitment to his work and colleagues. He also had a remarkable ability to lead, develop, and motivate teams, ensuring that projects were successfully executed.
Beyond his technical expertise, Duncan was a firm advocate for justice and workers' rights. He actively participated in the University Staff Union (KUSU) and CHUNA Sacco, where he fearlessly championed the rights of his colleagues.
Duncan’s legacy of commitment, excellence, and compassion continues to inspire those who had the privilege of working alongside him. His contributions remain an integral part of the University’s history, and his memory will forever live in the hearts of many.
May his soul rest in peace.
Tributes from Colleagues
Duncan's passing has left a profound void in the University community, particularly at ICTC, where he was a beloved and respected figure. His colleagues have shared heartfelt messages of condolence, reflecting on his impact both professionally and personally:
- Paul Kariuki, Director ICTC:
"Duncan was a dedicated professional who stood out in his work. He never gave up, believing that every repair was worth a trial. Gifted in both electronics and electrical work, he went beyond the call of duty to diagnose and resolve technical issues. His zeal for justice and unwavering commitment to human rights saw him boldly stand up for his colleagues. Duncan was kind-hearted, respectful, and always instilled hope, no matter the magnitude of the challenge." - Joseph Muchina, Deputy Director User Support & Maintenance:
"I am in disbelief. Duncan, you touched many and did your very best to satisfy all. I remember our last conversation and your determination to get back on your feet. God has taken your soul. I have no words to express my disbelief. RIP till we meet again." - Dr. Almaz Yohannis, Former ICT Maintenance Manager:
"Duncan was one of the most dedicated and hardworking individuals I have ever had the privilege to work with. From the moment he joined the ICT Maintenance section, he demonstrated an unparalleled commitment to excellence. His technical skills were exceptional, but it was his kindness, humility, and willingness to go the extra mile that truly set him apart. Duncan was not just a colleague; he was a friend and a mentor to many. His legacy will continue to inspire us all. May his soul rest in eternal peace." - Isaac Wasonga, Chief ICT Officer:
"Heartbreaking. What is life! Solomon the wise says, 'Therefore I hated life because the work that is done under the sun is grievous unto me, for all is vanity and like grasping the wind' (Ecclesiastes 2:17). And James 4:14 reminds us, 'For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away.' God have mercy." - Francis Chege, ICT Officer:
"This is truly heartbreaking news. Duncan was not only a skilled professional but also a kind and principled colleague who always went the extra mile to assist others. His dedication to his work and his unwavering stand for justice will be deeply missed. May he rest in peace." - Gabriel Ambuko, ICT Officer:
"Ooh God! Hard to process. A great colleague and friend, his kindness and dedication will always inspire us. Rest easy, Duncan." - Richard Musyoka, Chief ICT Officer, Voice Communication:
"My sincere condolences to the family of Duncan. He was always cheerful and available for advice and help. May his soul rest in peace." - Odanga Aaron, Chief ICT MIS:
"I am deeply saddened by this heartbreaking news. Duncan was an extraordinary individual, and his absence will be profoundly felt by all who had the honour of working with him. My heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with his family during this incredibly challenging time." - Michael Anindo, Chief ICT MIS:
"This news is beyond comprehension! Sad to the core... May all whose lives were touched by Duncan be comforted and accorded peace and tranquillity that can only be supplied from the Most High God. No words can humanly make it better except the trust in the grace of God." - Josephine Ndungu, Project Leader MIS:
"I refuse to accept that I won't meet Duncan at the entrance of the SCI/ICT building again. A spot we met a lot as he dashed to attend to humanity. Death is such a robber never to return its holds. I agree with my colleagues here that it is hard to take it in." - Hada Oketch, Chief ICT User Support:
"The ICT family is mourning the loss of Eng. Duncan Kariuki. A committed worker who wasn't shy about giving advice, accommodating your absence will take time. Let's all be comforted with: 1 Thessalonians 5:18, which says, 'Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.'" - Stephen Kyalo, Assistant Chief ICT User Support:
"I received the information with sorrow and sadness. What can I say? I have no words, only that the Mighty God comfort your entire family in Jesus Christ. Be strengthened and healed in your heart by the Lord God. Isaiah 57:18-19 says, 'I have seen their ways, but I will heal them; I will guide them and restore comfort to Israel's mourners, creating praise on their lips. Peace, peace, to those far and near,' says the LORD. 'And I will heal them.' Duncan, you mentored me in many things, both professionally and technically. I will miss your presence and dedication to our office. My brother, rest in peace."
Duncan Kariuki's influence on the ICT community and the University of Nairobi as a whole cannot be overstated. His dedication, technical expertise, and unwavering commitment to justice and human rights will be deeply missed. As we mourn his passing, we also celebrate his life and the legacy he leaves behind. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
