In a bid to foster best practices in data privacy, the University's Data Protection Officer (DPO) welcomed a delegation from Kibabii University for a benchmarking session focused on compliance with data protection regulations.
The visit, held at the University's premises, aimed to share insights and strategies for navigating the evolving landscape of data privacy in higher education. Representing Kibabii University were Dr. Anselemo Peters, Director of ICT, and Mr. Eric Sifuna, the institution's Privacy Officer (PO).
From the host side, key attendees included Mr. Paul Kariuki, who serves as both DPO and Director of ICT; Mr. Joram Kinuthia, Deputy Director of Network Infrastructure Services; Dr. Kiptoo, Deputy Director of Management Information Systems (MIS); Mr. Muchina, Deputy Director of User Support; Mr. Isaac Hassan, representing the Deputy Director of Communications; and Mr. Steve Otieno, ICT Security Officer.
During the session, Mr. Kariuki guided the visitors through the University's historical evolution and the technological advancements that have shaped its operations. Discussions delved into the University's registration with the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner (ODPC) as both a Data Controller and Processor. Participants also explored core data privacy principles, including the rights of data subjects, the importance of Records of Processing Activities (ROPA), and Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIA). The group examined recent developments in data privacy and their specific implications for Universities, such as safeguarding student and staff information amid digital transformations.
The meeting concluded on a forward-looking note, with both parties advocating for stronger inter-institutional collaborations. Emphasis was placed on ongoing engagements to build capacity in data protection, ensuring robust compliance and innovation in the sector.
This exchange underscores the University's commitment to leading in data governance while promoting knowledge-sharing among Kenyan higher education institutions.
