In Memory of Michael Mukiri (23 August 1982 – 14 March 2026)
Who He Really Was
Michael Mukiri was a trusted and gifted team player — a brilliant, passionate professional who
carried out every task with quiet dedication and never sought recognition for his contributions.
He was kind, compassionate, generous, and deeply dependable; the colleague you could always
count on for wise counsel, steady encouragement, or simply a listening ear. His technical
brilliance was remarkable — he had an extraordinary ability to find lasting solutions to the most
complex database and systems challenges. He took responsibility seriously, valued fairness and
genuine friendships, and lived by example in everything he did. His warmth, professionalism,
and quiet strength touched everyone who worked with him. Though his physical presence is
gone, the spirit of excellence, support, and brotherhood he brought to the ICT team will continue
to inspire us every day.
His Professional Journey
Michael joined the University of Nairobi immediately after graduating with a First-Class
Honours degree in Computer Science. Driven by a deep passion for technology and continuous
learning, he pursued his Master’s degree at the same university under the prestigious German
Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) scholarship. He returned with advanced global expertise
and served as a dedicated Database and Systems Specialist in the ICT Department. Over the
years, Michael became the department’s go-to expert for complex database challenges, systems
administration, and critical infrastructure support. He was known for his precision, strict
adherence to procedures, and unwavering commitment to integrity — qualities that made him the
dependable guardian of the University’s data systems. Even during the COVID-19 lockdown, he
worked tirelessly through early mornings and late nights to keep remote operations running
smoothly. His technical mastery, calm problem-solving, and quiet professionalism strengthened
the entire ICT team and left a lasting legacy of excellence.
Tributes from Colleagues
P. Kariuki, Director ICT “We mourn the loss of our colleague, whose passing has left a deep
void amongst us. Michael was an outstanding Database Administrator, a professional whose
strong hands-on skills and technical mastery greatly strengthened and enabled the ICT
Department at the University of Nairobi. He approached his work with diligence, precision, and
a deep sense of responsibility, ensuring that the systems entrusted to his care were handled with
competence and integrity. Many of us will remember Michael for his strict adherence to
procedure and his careful habit of confirming any action that appeared unusual or out of the
ordinary. He believed in doing things the right way, and his commitment to principle and
professional values made him a dependable guardian of our data infrastructure and a respected
member of the ICT team.”
Rest in peace, Mike. You will be deeply missed by the entire University of Nairobi community,
but your legacy of excellence, kindness, and quiet strength will continue to inspire us all. You
are remembered with gratitude and respect — forever in our hearts and in the systems you built
so well.
Dr. Lwande “Mike was a trusted and gifted team player, a brilliant chap who did his work with
dedication without ever asking for recognition. Mike handled every technical issue with passion
and dedication. During COVID-19 lockdown when we had to work remotely, Mike was a
dependable technical expert that The University of Nairobi relied on whether it was early
mornings or late nights. His absence will be felt in the quiet moments, the empty seat, and the
not-replied email messages signed DBA. However, we shall honour Mike by carrying the spirit
forward: supporting one another and never taking people around for granted. We bid him
farewell in his journey to eternity.”
J. Anyim “Working together at The University of Nairobi gave me the privilege of knowing you
not just as a colleague, but as a truly good person. You were kind, compassionate, generous, and
a truly dependable person. In moments when life or work felt overwhelming, you were someone
to count on for advice, for encouragement, or simply for a listening ear. Your departure leaves a
huge void, one that will be deeply felt by all of us who had the privilege of knowing and working
with you. Your quiet technical brilliance and remarkable ability to find lasting solutions to
complex database and systems challenges will be greatly missed. Even more than that, we will
miss you, your warmth, kindness and friendship that you gave so freely. Heaven has truly gained
a gentle and beautiful soul. Rest peacefully in the everlasting arms of our Father in heaven.
Amen.”
F. Masila “Working alongside you meant working alongside someone who took responsibility
seriously. Conversations were constructive because you valued friendships, fairness and mutual
understanding. You lived by example and your inspirational words will echo in our lives for
years to come. May your soul rest in eternal peace.”
