Prof Meoli Kashorda, the CEO KENET, with a team of managers from KENET  paid a courtesy call to the University of Nairobi ICTC Centre. He was received by the Director ICTC Christopher Moturi,  Deputy Directors and other Head of Sections of the Centre.

The KENET CEO briefed the newly appointed Director, ICT on the mandate of the KENET as a stakeholder in running of the universities.  He also informed the management of the various services that they offer mentioning the current projects/services that they are undertaking.

Some of the projects/services that are ongoing in the University of Nairobi are as follows;

  1. Provision of internet bandwidth – this he noted that KENET is providing 1.6 GB to the University and the demand is growing.  Recently the University of Nairobi was consuming 1.5 GB but due to increased demand, it was upgraded to 1.6 GB.  However he was quick to point out that, although the university pays for the 1.6 GB, during off pick the consumption goes over 2.0 GB.
  2. Providing links to interconnect the University campuses.   Previously this service was provided by Liquid Telcom but from the start of December, 1st 2017, KENET took over.  In this we have been able to upgrade the bandwidth to these campuses to meet the growing demand of the internet services.   Remote campuses which had poor connectivity eg Nakuru, Meru, Kisii, and Kakamega campuses have the last miles connection being upgraded to fiber.   This project is ongoing and expected to be complete within the next one month.
  3. Remote teaching project – This is a video conferencing project make to ease/enhance teaching between the university main campus, Mombasa campus and Kisumu campus.   In this project lecturers in Nairobi will be able to hold online lectures to students in these remote campuses without necessary going there in person.  This project is being piloted with the faculty of arts.
  4. The installation of hard ware solution in various campuses is complete and the service will be launched soon.

The KENET CEO requested for close collaboration between his organization and the university especially the ICT department stating that technology will enhance research in the university.

The Director – ICT assured KENET team that there is going to be close cooperation between the two organizations in all matters pertaining the provision of the best solutions.
